Departmental Overview The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) is an Organized Research Unit (ORU) of the Berkeley campus reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Research. SSL's primary goal is to foster research in space-related sciences and to provide education for the next generation of space scientists. Research at SSL, led by Berkeley faculty and SSL Senior Fellows, focuses on experiments and observations carried out in space as well as theoretical and basic research.
Since its inception in 1959, SSL has participated in over 50 NASA space science missions, including the Apollo, Mars, Discovery, and Explorer programs, as well as many international space missions. SSL researchers have pioneered the development of instrumentation for study of the Sun, the interplanetary medium, the planets, and the Earth; for ultraviolet, x-ray, gamma-ray, and infrared astronomy; and for the measurement of the cosmic microwave background. SSL provides the engineering and technical capabilities required to develop and fabricate individual space instruments, an entire scientific payload for a spacecraft, or an entire space mission from start-to-finish-complete with in-house instrument design and fabrication; instrument and spacecraft integration and testing; launch support; mission and science operations, including commanding the spacecraft and bringing the data down to SSL's own ground station; and data processing and analysis.
Responsibilities Involves engineering design and development of aerospace systems including scientific instruments for spacecraft and satellite command and control systems. Ensures the safe integration and testing of spacecraft to the launch vehicle and coordinates their operation in orbit.
Coordinates single component design, supporting analyses, construction planning, assembly oversight and testing.
Supervises or coordinates technicians and shop personnel involved in assembly and testing of component parts.
Develops specifications for aerospace parts procurements; works with other research organizations in the development of the component.
Consults and collaborates with Principal Investigators (PIs), shop personnel, vendors and other component engineers.
Designs mechanical systems and equipment.
Performs the recording and reduction of test data for instrument design and evaluation purposes.
Gathers and analyzes information and prepare reports with respect to feasibility, engineering design criteria and performance of their components.
Provides supervision and guidance to engineering technician staff.
Utilizes knowledge of materials and fabrication methods to design manufacturing processes and equipment for fabricating high-vacuum, microchannel plate, and sealed tube detectors for spaceflight.
Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
Working skills in the design, development and construction of space systems, including one successful aerospace product.
Specialist in the mechanical engineering discipline.
Working systems knowledge of other engineering specialties in order to integrate at the instrument level.
Skills in supervising engineering technician staff to ensure objectives are met in adherence to quality standards.
Experience in the design and fabrication methodology of mechanical, optical, and vacuum systems for space satellite programs.
Knowledge of specialty and alloy material properties, limitations, and their fabrication methods.
Knowledge of mechanical fabrication methods using all types of machine tools, plus cold and hot forming processes for the purposes of designing methodologies for the production of advanced instrumentation.
Knowledge of soldering, brazing and all types of welding, including state of the art processes such as the electron beam and laser processes for the purposes of designing methodologies for the production of advanced instrumentation.
Has an understanding of the implementation of NASA procedures, guidelines, and QA requirements.
