Under general supervision and using designated UW and Medical Center processes, the Patient Services Specialist (PSS) performs specialized clerical and transcription services for the Pulmonary Diagnostics Center (PDC) . The primary functions of this role are to provide patient support services in scheduling appointments, registration and assisting patients; and to transcribe medical reports from the pulmonary specialty providers within PDC. Typical Work:
Schedule new and returning patients for pulmonary function testing consistent with patient needs and scheduling guidelines.
Verify, collect and update demographic and financial information by appropriate means.
Respond to patient questions, provide directions to specified areas such as clinics, other units and parking, assist patients and families with telephone calls, maintain confidentiality of patient information.
Triage patient telephone calls to clinical staff, obtain necessary information for return calls; initiate emergency procedures when necessary.
Manage and maintain department patient chart system.
Transcribe confidential, technical medical reports and letters concerning UWMC patients that are from the pulmonary service providers within PDC.
Proof-read typewritten material to verify terminology, correct errors for business and medical English, rules of grammar, spelling, punctuation and form.
Maintain production, quality standards and confidentiality as prescribed by department and HIPPA compliance.
