Paid, remote intern - Free and Open Source Software
October 8, 2018
$5,500 stipend for three month
Contract - Internship
Computer & Mathematical, Engineering, Information Technology
Outreachy provides three-month internships to work in Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). Interns are paid a stipend of $5,500 and have a $500 travel stipend available to them. Outreachy internship projects may include programming, user experience, documentation, illustration and graphical design, or data science. Interns often find employment after their internship with Outreachy sponsors or in jobs that use the skills they learned during their internship.
Outreachy internships are open to applicants around the world. Interns work remotely with mentors from FOSS communities.
We expressly invite women (both cis and trans), trans men, and genderqueer people to apply. We also expressly invite applications from residents and nationals of the United States of any gender who are Black/African American, Hispanic/Latin@, Native American/American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander. Anyone who faces under-representation, systemic bias, or discrimination in the technology industry of their country is invited to apply.
Outreachy's application process is a little different from other internship programs. Applicants will need to fill out an initial application and have it be approved. Then they will need to make a contribution to an open source project during the six-week application period. Only applicants who finish a contribution will be eligible to be accepted as an intern. We find the most successful applicants are ones that make smaller, consistent contributions throughout the application period, contact mentors, and ask the mentors and community questions when they get stuck.
Applications for December 2018 to March 2019 internships are now open. The deadline for contributions is October 30, but potential applicants should start working on their contributions 2-3 weeks before the deadline.
The list of FOSS mentoring communities can be found at:
The Outreachy internship program has been active since 2006. Each year, we have around 80 interns who work remotely with experienced mentors from free and open source software communities.
The internship is fully remote, and the hours are flexible, as long as interns put in 40 hours a week. Interns receive a $5,500 stipend for three months of work, and have a $500 travel stipend to attend conferences or events to network with the open source community and employers. Our alums find jobs with companies like Intel, ARM, Red Hat, Oracle, DigitalOcean, Gitlab, and more.
