Position Description: DIRECTOR, Science, Technology, and Society Program (Tenure Track, OPEN RANK, Associate/Full Professor Preferred) - The College of Liberal Arts at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo invites applications for a full-time, academic-year tenure-track position of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor and Director of Science, Technology, and Society (STS) Program, beginning September 12, 2019. The position includes a strong expectation for teaching excellence, scholarly productivity and professional development, and service to the department, college, university, and community. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to lead the growth and operation of the STS minors and emerging interdisciplinary programs, including a possible Interdisciplinary Studies (IS) major and department, and other opportunities. The successful candidate should demonstrate leadership ability, a broad vision for the future of STS/IS in the College of Liberal Arts at Cal Poly, and the ability to effectively collaborate across disciplines. Applications are sought from any discipline represented by one of the college's 15 tenure-line departments. This position carries both teaching and administrative duties. Credit toward tenure may be awarded depending on years of teaching experience, professional development, and rank. The administrative assignment is for an initial period of three years, renewable at the Dean's discretion. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with the selected candidate's qualifications and experience. The typical teaching load in Cal Poly's College of Liberal Arts is 12 units per quarter, with correspondingly reasonable research/scholarship and service expectations. Candidates will also have a significant reduction in course load in the first one to two years to help establish an active program of research/scholarship/creative activity and to oversee the leadership of the STS/IS Program. For this position, teaching and service assignments will be divided between the interdisciplinary programs and the home department in proportions agreeable to all parties. The successful candidate will teach courses such as Introduction to Science, Technology, and Society; Advanced Project-Based Learning in Science, Technology, and Society; Interdisciplinary Research Methods; and/or specific courses as determined by areas of expertise and programmatic need. The successful candidate will be expected to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with students, faculty, staff, and administration. Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only): Required Qualifications: PhD in Science and Technology Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies or related field, or PhD or equivalent with a STS emphasis in any of the following disciplines in the College of Liberal Arts: Communication Studies, English, Ethnic Studies, History, Music, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology & Child Development, Social Sciences (Sociology, Anthropology, Geography), Women's & Gender Studies and World Languages & Cultures (i.e., Spanish, French, German). MFA or other terminal Masters Degree would qualify as a terminal degree in the following CLA disciplines: MFA for Art and Theatre; MA/MS for Journalism and Graphic Communication. Evidence of successful university teaching and programmatic leadership are required. Applicants must have training that intersects in meaningful ways with STS, which can come from a range of disciplinary homes, and must approach scholarship, teaching and service from an interdisciplinary perspective. Teaching, research and service must reflect a level of activity appropriate for rank. Salary and rank are commensurate with qualifications and experience. Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates with a record of demonstrated excellence in programmatic leadership and development in an STS context. Experience in an administrative role and/or academic leadership position in higher education is highly desired.
