Under general supervision of the Laboratory Manager, incumbent is responsible for the data acquisition aspect of structural testing at the Charles Lee Powell Structural Research Laboratories. Responsibilities include but not limited to performing the application of engineering design plans, specifications and instrumentation, conducting experimental tests and generating test data for inclusion in written reports to submit to PIs and clients.
Uses professional engineering concepts to perform moderately complex engineering assignments. Works in a specialized engineering field on a major training and/or research effort. Works on assignments of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.
Must be able to work outside of regular working hours (evenings & weekends) as required in support of research projects.
Graduation from college with major work in engineering, and two to three (2 - 3) years of engineering experience including one (1) year of responsible design work; or an equivalent combination of additional education and experience. Major work in structural, mechanical and/or electrical engineering preferred.
Demonstrated experience in the operation of hydraulic actuators.
Demonstrated experience in rigging, moving, placing and securing heavy loads with overhead bridge crane and forklift.
Proven ability to design mechanical and instrumentation layouts for structural testing. Proven ability to develop data acquisition and signal conditioning systems.
Proven working knowledge of engineering principles and methods in order to independently perform professional engineering design work of limited scope and complexity.
Working and theoretical knowledge of strain gages, load cells, potentiometers, extensometers, dvms, oscilloscopes, voltage standards and other instrumentation devices.
Working knowledge necessary to begin independent application of principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments. Extensive knowledge of real time data acquisition systems and data manipulation software.
Skilled in the operation of machine tools including lathe, milling machine, drill press and cutoff band saws. Familiar with measuring systems, including calipers, micrometers and dial gages. Familiar with use of cutting torch and arch welder.
Organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments.
Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to write clear and concise reports.
Ability to work in a collaborative manner, to assist in identifying any challenges or barriers. Ability to communicate effectively with lab personnel, researchers, faculty and outside customers.
Must have a valid California driver's license.
Exposure to occasional loud noises, vibrations, heat, dust, and allergens due to construction activities while conducting materials and structural testing.
