Under the general supervision of the Assistant Manager / Undergraduate Program Coordinator, the position provides support to the Department of Literature in all function areas. Primary areas of responsibility are in the areas of: 1) department administrative and general student support, 2) undergraduate program support, and 3) graduate program support.
LITERATURE DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
The Literature Department currently has 29 academic full time employees, an administrative staff of seven, and makes approximately 25-30 temporary academic staff appointments each year. Literature presently has 550 declared and proposed undergraduate majors and 80 M.A. and Ph.D. graduate students. The Department is administered by a Chair to whom four appointed faculty administrative Directors report: the Directors of Academic Personnel, the Graduate Program, the Undergraduate Program and Graduate Student Placement.
Literature is a large Department with an organizational and curricular structure unique not only to UCSC but to most colleges and universities. The Literature Department encompasses multiple literary traditions and offers programs that are normally housed and administered through a number of individual and separate departments at other university and college campuses. Multiple undergraduate and graduate degree major and minor concentrations are offered, both in the original language and in English translation. Students may choose among national or transnational literatures or a selective and recognized program in creative writing. Literature offers approximately 230 courses and course sections annually and appoints 100 teaching assistants per year.
Related administrative experience.
Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including experience creating a variety of written materials.
The ability to disseminate information in a clear, accurate, and effective manner.
Professional demeanor and discretion in dealing with sensitive or confidential matters.
Experience within a university or equivalent organization.
Preferred work schedule: 9am-4pm, Monday - Friday. Selected candidate will be required to pass a criminal history background check.
