Job Summary We are looking for an individual with a physics/astronomy or computer science background to assist the Principal Investigator (PI) of the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF), which saw first light in early November, with first year data analysis and research. The selected candidate is expected to assist with the Bright Supernova key project - one of the largest supernova programs to be undertaken and is expected to provide a legacy catalog for fundamental studies in stellar astronomy.
This is a one year term, with the possibility of extension, benefit-based position located on the Caltech campus in Pasadena, California.
Job Duties - Ingest, on a near daily basis, ZTF and related data for nearby supernovae. - Reduce spectroscopic data obtained from the SEDM instrument. - Link entries to supernovae from other catalogs (e.g. PS-1, GALEX, WISE). - Once a week, undertake observations at Palomar (mostly remote). - Assist PI in preparing paper on the survey. - Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications - BS degree in physical sciences, astronomy, or computer science. - Advanced computer programming skills in Python. - Interest in astronomical research. - Enthusiastic and ability to work independently. - Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid California Drivers License and be able to maintain it throughout the course of employment.
Preferred Qualifications - Experience in scientific computing and familiarity with database concepts and related tools. - Background in MATLAB and C/C++. - Knowledge of astronomy at the undergraduate level.
