The Veterinary Technician in this position will assist faculty staff and students with evening treatments, including but not limited to: administering evening treatments to animals admitted to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital under supervision of the professional staff, providing clinical assistance to the professional staff, instructing veterinary students in proper clinical techniques supporting patient care, and maintaining a sanitary and functionally well-organized service within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. The Small Animal Surgery Technician is responsible to provide coverage and assistance to other services during technician absences, increased caseload, to facilitate teaching laboratories, and as assigned by supervisor.
Required Education and Experience:
Associate degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area.
Any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
No experience required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Basic computer skills in word processing, spread sheets, and billing entry.
General understanding of equipment used in a veterinary medical teaching hospital.
Working knowledge of veterinary equipment used within a veterinary teaching hospital such as anesthetic machines, fluid pumps, blood gas analyzers, oscilloscopes, defibrillators, nebulizers, and endoscopic equipment.
May require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, or âœon-call dutyâ.
Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.

No inhibiting allergies to animals, hay or dust.
Must be able to lift heavy loads. Ability to work alternate shifts and provide holiday coverage.
Persons in this position are considered essential when the University declares an emergency, campus closure, class cancellations, etc., and are therefore required to report to work and remain on duty unless/until relieved by the direct supervisor.

Preferred Education and Experience:
Certification as a Registered Veterinary Technician.
One year experience in a veterinary medical setting.
Preferred Licenses and Certifications:
Certification as a Licensed Veterinary Technician.

Salary: $13.01 to $16.72 per hour
Provides proper physical restraint to allow for safe handling of patients. Instructs and supervises students in proper clinical techniques to support patient care. Keeps patients cleaned and groomed. Places and maintains IV catheters. Administers and monitors patient diets as prescribed by the clinician. Exercises patients as prescribed. Collects or assists with the collection of the patientâ™s blood, urine, and tissue samples. Properly submits patientâ™s blood, urine, and tissue samples for analysis. Assists with and instructs students in performing proper physical examinations and diagnostic procedures. Properly medicates patients as directed by the clinician. Teaches students proper patient restraint for safe handling of patients.
Assists in treatments of SA Surgery patients. Obtain medications needed for treatments from the hospital Cubex machines. Performs proper aseptic surgical site preparation. Assists in the recovery of anesthetized patients. Properly bandages and provides wound care for patients. Posts the surgery/appointment schedule in a timely manner. Assists in bronchoscopy procedures. Assists in all surgery services, providing technical support due to absence of assigned technician or caseload requires. Provide assistance to other services as caseload permits.
Correctly enters appropriate fees into the hospital computer information system (VMIS). Ensures that all charges generated from treatments, procedures, and supplies are correctly entered (VMIS). Enters patient data into the hospital computer information system. Properly records all medications given to patients. Assists with return of radiographs to referral veterinarians.
Maintains a sanitary and well organized service area. Restocks expendable supplies, drugs, and solutions. Maintains records of expendable supplies, drugs, and solutions. Schedules equipment maintenance as needed. Assists with maintaining minor procedures room. Prepares sterile supplies and instruments
Participates in clinical and basic research programs as needed within the terms of employment.
Maintains the following certifications: Radiation safety, Infection Control, Aseptic Technique, Certification or licensure where appropriate, Current Rabies vaccination, monitor rabies titer
Performs other duties as assigned.
