Incumbent will assist Principal Investigator (PI) in research on transcriptional regulation and chromatin in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Duties to include the following: grow and maintain yeast strain collection and bacterial plasmid collection, including computer cataloging of all members of each collection; and perform genetic, biochemistry and molecular biology procedures such as RNA and DNA preparation, gel electrophoresis, Western blotting, etc. Incumbent will serve as Lab Manager to coordinate, maintain and organize lab, act as assistant lab safety coordinator, order lab supplies and monitor lab expenditures. Assist in selecting and training UG Lab support workers. In addition, incumbent will participate in the publication of scientific manuscripts based on experiments performed, when appropriate.
Must be willing to work overtime (nights or weekend) when required by particular experiments.
Demonstrated experience working with molecular biology procedures such as DNA and RNA cloning, gel electrophoresis, Western blotting, etc.
Demonstrated skill with stoichiometric calculations, i.e. molarity, etc.
Experience working with antibodies and yeast.
Theoretical understanding of biochemistry, molecular biology, or genetic; BS in biochemistry, molecular biology or genetics OR an equivalent combination of education and laboratory experience.
Knowledge and skill with sterile techniques.
Experience with the operation of laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, ultracentrifuges, balances, pH meters.
Demonstrated ability to record scientific data in a well-organized laboratory notebook. Demonstrated organizational skills to keep clear and accurate records.
Knowledge of specialized scientific terminology.
Experience in using MAC and associated software, including FilemakerPro, MS Word, and Excel.
Knowledge of library usage to locate journal in stacks and from network resources and copy specific articles.
Knowledge of Material Data Safety Sheets, and hazardous communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Knowledge of laboratory safety precautions, including use of protective items such as goggles, coats, etc., and the ability to train other laboratory members in safety precautions.
Knowledge of purchasing and reimbursement procedures. Skill in maintaining purchasing records, steady levels of lab supplies, and training others in purchasing procedures.
Experience and knowledge of proper handling, storage and disposal of chemicals, radioisotopes, biochemicals, hazardous chemicals, and biohazardous materials, including radioactive materials.
Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment.
