Functions/Duties of Position The Registered Nurse works as a key member of a multi-disciplinary Radiation team and has the primary responsibility for and provides direct and indirect professional nursing care for patients undergoing radiation treatment. The RN serves as a key communication link between the patient, his/her family, and the care team. The RN is a continuous advocate for patients and their families, ensuring that clinical and business systems are customer service focused. The RN practices in accord with professional standards, core values and with a commitment to service excellence. The RN reorts to the Department Director in Radiation Oncology.
The Radiation Medicine Department provides total family-oriented medical care in a practice setting staffed by faculty and residents of Oregon Health & Science University. The nurse coordinates patient care that is provided through other practices and hospitals. The nurse conducts patient care five days per week at OHSU Radiation Medicine clinics, including the Marquam Hill and Beaverton locations. The Radiation Medicine Department provides age appropriate care to age groups from infants to geriatric patients.
The RN ensures all baseline clinical information, both diagnostic and therapeutic, is gathered together in a systematic fashion prior to the patients visit. S/he works to ensure that new patients are prepared for testing, evaluation and potential outcome of the visits ahead of time.
The RN collaborates with the Managed Care Coordinators and PAS team to ensure that all appropriate billing information is gathered prior to the visit, authorizations have been obtained and pre-registration has taken place.
The RN ensures patient flow through the clinic is efficient. The RN is responsible for patient assessment and reporting of findings to the physician during these visits.
The RN ensures that Physician orders that result from patient visits are recorded and executed. S/he also works to ensure that laboratory and other diagnostic findings are available to clinicians in a timely fashion after tests are performed. S/he tracks the post visit flow of information to ensure that plans of care are executed in a timely fashion.
GENERAL CLINICAL/PATIENT CARE:
Identified needs of patients through observations of disease symptoms, emotional state, cultural and socioeconomic background and response to medical regimen and treatment. Uses knowledge of the cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological maturation process. Incorporates assessment of pain, nutritional and functional needs.
Triages and responds appropriately. Recognizes and reports specific physical and emotional conditions/needs/concerns of the patients to appropriate members of the health care team. Alerts Physicians' to unusual observations of patients to facilitate immediate attention.
Plans as appropriate for the needs of patients and uses knowledge of the cognitive, physical, emotional and chronological maturation process. Collaborates with Physicians' and other members of the clinical support team in planning for the needs of the patients and demonstrates an understanding of the range of treatment required by patients.
Responds to the emotional needs of patients by demonstrating sensitivity to the emotional state of patients and by relating to patients in an appropriate manner. Refers to appropriate members of the health team as indicated.
Assesses patient/family learning needs; including barriers to learning and the most effective teaching methods. Implements patient teaching utilizing all available resources.
Responds appropriately in emergencies. Is knowledgeable about the contents of the code cart and can initiate and assist CPR. Understands the procedures for medical emergencies, code blue and their emergency disaster situations.
RN will coordinate appointments and order for planned admissions and communicate the plan to the inpatient staff to ensure optimal clinical outcomes.
Provides documentation as required by established OHSU policies and provides written documentation that is consistent with clinical observations procedures.
Reviews and assures accuracy of transcribed orders for assigned patients.
Seeks input and consultation from others.

Job Requirements Education : Required: BSN for external applicants. Preferred: BSN for internal applicants
Experience : Required: One (1) year recent experience in a nursing environment. Recent experience in Oncology. Preferred: recent experience in Oncology.
Job Related Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Competencies): Preferred: Professional Demeanor. Strong triage skills. Strong organizational skills. Leadership ability demonstrated by role modeling. Communication skills. At least 1 year experience in providing telephone nursing support. Preferred : Demonstrated experience in patient and family education.
Registrations, Certifications and/or Licenses: Required : Current CPR Certification. Preferred: ONS certification, OCN certification

This position entails providing coverage at both the Marquam Hill Campus as well as the Beaverton Community Clinic site. This position requires continuous walking and may require aiding patients to walk, move or transfer between wheelchairs, chairs or gurneys.
