Carries out complex, multi-step procedures specified in protocols or the oral instructions of a senior worker. An example would be processing specimens for disease agent testing through independent thinking and macrpscopic lesion recognition and analysis. (15%)
Assist pathologists and parapathologists with the recognition and recording of gross lesions, collection of specimens and requesting of appropriate secondary diagnostic testing based on case history and necropsy findings during post mortem animal examinations. (15%)
Drawing blood samples from animals and assisting with euthanasia (5%)
Categorizing, examining, and evaluating formalin fixed organ sections for the preparation of histological slides.(25%)
Inspecting the samples and secondary diagnostic testing requests of completed cases and routing the samples to other laboratory sections and outsource providers (10%)
General lab maintenance (10%)
Loading, unloading and assisting with operation of the tissue digester (5%)
Operating and maintaining Necropsy Lab equipment (5%)
Reading and following Standard Operating Procedures related to general laboratory guidelines, specific testing, and laboratory safety issues using Q-Pulse software. Microsoft Word and Excel are also used to generate laboratory worksheets and reports. (10%)
All required qualifications must be documented on application materials.
A Bachelor's degree with specialization in a natural or social science discipline, or education in the specific or related field of science and work experience related to the job totaling at least four years in combination.
Must be able to lift up to 30 lbs and stand for long periods of time. After hire must have tuberculosis skin testing, rabies and tetanus vaccinations and also fit testing for full-face respirator.
Post-mortem examination and sample collection experience.
Understanding and/or experience with diagnostic testing and procedures.
Knowledge of anatomy of a variety of animal species.
Previous laboratory or clinical animal experience especially with large animal species.
Demonstrated ability to multitask in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
