Reporting to the Associate Controller, the School of Medicine is seeking an Accountant to perform moderately complex accounting activities and finance functions, including monitoring accounts, reconciliations, reviewing/approving purchases and reimbursements, general ledger transactions, and journal entries involving the School of Medicine, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and VA Medical Center.
Research and resolve operating budget GL errors/default AP accounts. Develop solutions to correct errors and rationales to explain anomalies and work with the Associate Controller/Controller and the assigned SOM departments to resolve.
Collect data and perform research on details of transactions. Monitor and manage housing allowance transactions on a bi-monthly/ad hoc basis as requested by the departments, ensuring adherence to established policies and guidelines. Independently review and approve early Project/Task/Award accounts for sponsored projects.
Reconcile department accounts on a monthly basis. Identify reasons that accounts may not balance and work with the departments to correct.
Identify, prioritize, and resolve accounting issues. Independently review expense reimbursements from the departments. Ensure all reimbursements are allowable and compliant with Stanford and State/Federal policies.
Work with the departments to collect annual figures for the monthly inter-entity journal. Independently review figures for accuracy and input the figures into the journal. Ensure the journal stays in compliance.
Work with peers and department leadership to communicate and implement any new financial/reporting systems.
Recommend, assist, test, or implement process streamlining, system improvements, or work flow changes. Contribute to the development and maintenance of desktop procedures and process documentation.

Accounting experience in an academic or fund accounting environment.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Associate degree plus two years of applicable experience, or combination of education and relevant work experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
Proficiency in basic business applications, such as Microsoft Office; user knowledge of Excel.
Basic knowledge of accounting systems and the internet; computer literacy.
Understanding of and ability to apply accounting skills and concepts.
Ability to draft professional e-mails, memos, business letters, and reports, and to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal audiences and client groups.
Ability to learn project management skills and to participate as part of a project team.
Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
Frequently sit, sort, file paperwork or parts, grasp lightly, and use fine manipulation, lift, carry, push and pull objects that weigh 10 pounds or less.
Occasionally write by hand, twist, bend, stoop and squat.
